The iPod Shuffle

Robyn has some lovely posts about Christmas music over on her blog. I haven’t been listening to much of it myself. While White Christmas, Ella Wishes You a Swingin’ Christmas, Charlie Brown Christmas, and a mix including Judy Garland’s “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” have received airplay here and there, I’ve mostly been listening to other stuff. Some years I have the holiday spirit, and some years I don’t. This year I’m forcing the cheer a little bit, but I’m also giving myself permission to be a snarky humbug (see every post since forever) when necessary.

In the snarky humbug spirit, nary a holiday tune has landed in my iPod, making workdays carol-free. Here’s what I’ve been listening to today in lieu of holiday tidings:

“Shine a Light”—Wolf Parade
“Blue Vein”—Raconteurs, (live)
“I Put a Spell on You”—Nina Simone
“Lay, Lady, Lay”—Some kickass Dylan cover from a friend’s mix
“Mr. Tough”—Yo La Tengo
“Handshake Drugs”—Wilco (live)
“Boho Dance”—Joni Mitchell
“I Love My Jean”—Camera Obscura
“Hotel”—Broken Social Scene
“Authority Box”—Robyn Hitchcock

Something of a strange shuffle if you ask me, but I’m grooving. Now I’m off to a meeting. Wish me luck; I’m leading it, and with all the warehousing, I haven’t the faintest idea what’s going on. I’ll leave you with a question. What are you listening to?

  1. You! ha!

The headphones I bought to replace the ones whose cord I severed don’t have a long enough cord to make listening to music from my Yahoo! radio station easy to do while moving around doing paperwork. So I’m back to listening to you and the whir or my printer.

Did you have fun in your meeting?

  2. had some iPod shuffle going on myself. I’ve always wondered whether the iPod has some sort of memory and knows how to blend similar genres with like genres of music. I quickly learned as Over the Rhine (folksy rootsy) gave way to Lamb of God (growly metal) that this was not the case.

  3. I am in and out of the room with the iTune access, so when I can I’m listening to The Boston Camerata Christmas singing An AMerican Christmas. Lovely.

  4. I was listening to Bowie yesterday to keep my mind active I’ve decided to memorise song words so Golden years is the first song, no headphones for me, I’m not ashamed of what i play hahaha, well unless I play that lil drummer boy.

  5. Sorry, Carissa. It was an interesting one. I talked a bit about how one book had glue that smelled terrible and then passed it around.

James, I used to think that it was a smart function, but Wolf Parade to Joni Mitchell doesn’t make much sense to me.

Robyn, I’m glad you are listening to Christmas music. Sounds wonderful.

Knudsen, Bowie rocks. He’s on here somewhere. Golden Years is a great tune. Do you have the Drummer Boy one with Bing Crosby and David Bowie? That’s a strange little duet.

  8. Rich, there’s a great duet with Bing and Bowie from 1977. You should check it out—The Little Drummer Boy/Peace on Earth. The meeting was interesting. Now the Editors are screaming about how I don’t need this disease (“Bullet”). Wait. Now it’s “Kiss Me on the Bus” from the Replacements (I heart Paul).
