Life, Liberty, and ROUNDHOUSE for Jesus!

Confession time. After seven long years of Dumb W’s war-mongering horror show and one long year of presidential debates, this political junkie finally overdosed on the whole thing. I just wasn’t able to bring myself to obsess over the primaries.

For one thing, I didn’t really like any Democratic candidate. Hillary Clinton voted for the Iraq War and took a long time to back down from her support of it. I don’t think that Barack Obama has the experience necessary to lead the country. John Edwards doesn’t stand a chance in a national race. And, in addition to being a very late convert to a pro-choice position, Kucinich is a bit of a odd one. With choices like these, it was hard for me to get excited.

For another thing, I no longer live in New Hampshire. I figured that my primary vote will come too late to make much of a difference. Without much at stake with this vote, I thought that I may as well vote for a woman for president. It’s about time. That settled in my mind, I pretty much stopped paying close attention. I already knew that I’d vote for the Democratic nominee. It’s their race to lose, right?

Maybe not. I might not have been obsessed with the primaries, but I wasn’t completely out of the loop. In the last couple of months, Mike Huckabee caught my politically lazy eye and made me nervous. And damnit, if he didn’t win the Republican Iowa Caucus. Huckabee has charismatic charm reminiscent of another right-wing fascist fellow. Americans are suckers for charm, no matter what kind of anti-science, anti-choice, anti-secular society, anti-immigrant, anti-gay, anti-everything-that-we’re-supposed-to-stand-for face it masks. We had eight years of Reagan, and Dumb W rode on those coat tails. Huckabee is a problem.

Like I said, he got my attention. Among other things, I knew that he had been running some ads with Chuck Norris. I thought it was something of a joke, rather like that blender guy. But after watching Huckabee’s victory speech, I’m not so sure. Yes, that was CHUCK NORRIS standing right behind Huckabee when he gave his victory speech in Iowa—and it wasn’t a gag on Conan O’Brien. There was no lever. Does America really want a president, however charming he may be, who stands tall with Chuck Norris? Life, liberty, and ROUNDHOUSE for Jesus! Really?

Oh shit.

  1. Scary stuff indeed…

  2. What’s scary is that you’re going to have to vote for someone who you don’t really want, simply to keep an insane bigot from gaining power.
What the fuck is he doing in the race in the first place? What kind of imbecile selects these people?
I’m glad there’s an ocean between us, Sassy.

  3. Frightening indeed. Saw Huckabee on one of the Sunday political chats over the weekend (was it Meet the Press? Can’t remember, one of them that comes on after Sports Reporters) and I’m already asking friends in Canada if they have room for me. Not just him either, the whole lot of candidates.

    We’re fucked.

  4. Sassy, you know my political leanings all too well as do most of the Bloggers in Bloggville. I am with you in respect that Huckabee is more of the same as far as “Bible Thumping” do-gooders who more than likely has way to many skeletons in the closet. I don’t want more of the same nor do I want to vote for a woman just because. (besides I would rather gouge my eyes out with a spoon that vote for the *$&@) Yep I said it!
That isn’t smart on any level. I too think Obama is still wet behind the ears, but maybe that is what we need. Someone who isn’t a Washington insider, someone who won’t cave on his campaign promises. Trust me, I don’t agree with many of Obama’s talking points. Quiet honestly giving me back $1,000.00 in tax cuts is like a piss hole in the snow. All of the Dems are talking Middle Class tax cuts. I can spend $1,000.00 in 20 minutes and it won’t affect my overall living conditions and will evaporate in an instance. Giving small businesses tax breaks to grow their business, hire new staff and make more money, now that would make a difference for the future. I am tired of hearing about the Middle Class. Unless they give me a direct raise of $5,000.00 or more a year the pittance that will actually arrive in my paycheck from their proposed tax cuts is negligible. It is a joke because they will just raise a tax here or one there and take it back anyway.

  5. Scary indeed!
I don’t think there is a truly “wonderful” option out there this time around, and it will come down to selecting the lesser of evils.

  6. Obama needs to get his own tough guy….. what’s Lee Majors at these days?

  7. The Hangar Queen

If Fuckabee wins I’m leaving the US.

I saw a great bumper sticker yesterday “Vote For Cthulhu! Why Vote For A Lesser Evil?”

    Why indeed?

  8. OMG, Devin.
    Fuckabee!
    Love it.
    I spit my tea out.

Obama doesn’t have much experience but unlike shrub he’s smart and can learn and bring good people into his cabinet.
I don’t like Hilary or Edwards so Obama will get my vote, if it ever gets counted.

  9. Sassy – any chance of a Weekly Round-Up return?? I miss it.

  10. You’re right sass, there’s not much to choose from.

  11. I was really surprised by the Chuck Norris thing–what is that man thinking? He wants to be leader of one of the most powerful nations in the world, yet he campaigns with Chuck Norris. I get their Christian connection, but please.

Huckabee is a problem, but I think it’s too early to tell who will come out on top on either side yet. Let’s wait and see.

  12. Oh, dear. AM finally came back because she’s been missing smart and politics in the same conversation only to find that she’s late to the game. Sassy gave up after Iowa? Say not so. Iowa? Where’s that? Huckabee? Who’s that? He doesn’t stand a snowball’s chance.

Maybe after last night, Sassy will feel more sassy and less grumpy again. New Mom Me is a teensy bit starved so finally paid some attention to New Hampshire and now finds herself a teensy bit gleeful that “the news” called it wrong, irrespective of about whom.

  13. McCain will win as I’ve always said. Clinton was a presidents wife, she has as much experience as Obama.
The Iowa Caucus is a funny thing. Two parties to decide who from their parties who to put forward and the tax payer foots the bill. See anything wrong with that?

Huckabee is funny but a bumbler like Bush.

  14. Flirty Something

    bloody hell, chuck norris

  15. Hey Sassy, come back. We need a round up on super tuesday that isn’t from a hired muppet on a TV network!
